POTW: Tornado

If by chance I’ll go to this place and bring my camera with me and tornados want to chase me, well… I’ll free myself. Hihihi

This picture is kick-arse because it’s so amazing and I hate it.

For Lauren & Francois who want to see a tornado —

I’ve lived in Tornado Alley all my life and I’ve never seen a tornado — not like the one you envision — a long, terrifyingly beautiful funnel from afar. The May 3, 1999 tornado that devastated south Oklahoma City was only a few miles away from me in north Oklahoma City but those few miles make all the difference. We barely got any rain here because the storm moved east of us. HOWEVER, I have been IN and close to a few tornadoes. But when you are in the storm, it’s rare to be able to see the tornado because the rain is so dense and wind so strong. It’s often so noisy that you cannot hear the warning sirens telling you to take cover. So if you come to Tornado Alley to see a tornado, plan on hiring a professional storm chaser to find you one — and keep you safe.

    To Jennifer,
The people who live in the house you can see in the photo may not have suffered any damage at all. That tornado has touched down on the far side of the trees behind the house. You can see debris and dust picked up by the tornado but not all the way to the ground so you know it’s on the other side of the trees. Even when a tornado is bigger and wider than the one in the photo, it can completely demolish a house but leave the house next door almost untouched. A tornado can even pick up a house and move it off its foundation but otherwise leave it pretty much intact. It’s weird. The May 3, 1999 tornado ripped a baby out of her mother’s arms. The baby was later found in a field — alive and unhurt except for scratches and bruises. Go figure!
